JtP: [Touhou Vocal] Dream-Coloured Prelude

76478448_p0

Preamble:

This is my first post in a long time since I went off the radar to pursue my graduate/post-graduate research. Unfortunately I can’t be very active here – reading and experimenting takes up way too much time to do any other non-research-related hobby reading/writing. So I’m just going with the bare minimum of posting (if that is even the case) what I manage to come up with during my break times.

This post will be totally different from my usual review writings.
It is a translation post (Japanese Translation Post == JtP). I’ve specifically made a new corner, whimsically, to satisfy my own desire to translate a new Touhou song which I can’t get enough of (Part of the reason is also because I can’t stand it when random youtubers change lyrical subtitles to MVs which initially had the correct nuance).

{Foreword: Song of the Domesticated Lonely Chicken God}
{Context: 庭渡 久侘歌 | Niwatari Kutaka is the 3rd stage mid-boss and 3rd stage final-boss in Touhou 17: Wily Beast and Weakest Creature. Her name itself suggests the self-imposed song foreword}

Running through the present, towards the endless bright sky.
What I thought I was looking for, was to take your hand and never let go.
Closing my eyes, I realize that all I wanted was for you to notice me.
Now as the prelude plays, I shall set off on my journey.

What I want to see is your everlasting fun-filled smile.
“Don’t let these feelings disappear” I whispered to the shooting star,
Because these memories and the warmth I felt with you, are all precious to me.
Scooping up these thoughts, the wind carried my voice along with it as I made my wish.

That day I saw a destination which I yearn to reach, though it was just an illusion of mine.
If I’m with you, I’d be able to fly even further and aim for the stars.
“It’s alright. May this unfulfilled wish of mine reach you someday.”
I hoped, so that this ephemeral dream of mine may never end.

Before succumbing to the cold, I hope to feel the heat from our mutual gaze.
I thought – If our fingers were to touch, they would surely melt into one another.
Wishing that I may embrace your light(soul) and never let go,
Within the confines of this scenery(dream) I’ve shut myself in.

Surely it’s because my emotions are entirely filled with my thoughts of you,
that I’m blushing – Brightening red like an anemone.
I love you, and I miss you. Right now, I wish to protect you with all I have.
So now as the prelude plays, I shall set off on my journey.

As the rhythm I hold dear quickens its pace and gripped at my heart,
It feels as though my deeply rooted emotions for you were going to disappear.
“Please… Don’t let these feelings I’ve finally discovered disappear!”
“Don’t give up and let go”
“Hey, it isn’t like you with that worried look on your face.”
“Wipe away those tears already. You’ll be able to fly if you flap your wings”
“Show what you’re capable of!”

Surely it’s because my emotions are entirely filled with my thoughts of you,
that I’m blushing – Brightening red like an anemone.
“It’s alright. May this unfulfilled wish of mine reach you someday.”
I hoped, so that this ephemeral dream of mine may never end.

Afterthoughts:

This is by far one of the most memorable vocal arrangements by Shoujo Fractal, putting it on par with its other vocal arrangement on Sanae Kochiya’s theme (果てなき風の軌跡さえ | Even the Endless Wind needs its Trajectory).

This song – needless to say, is about chasing your dreams.
Sounds like a naive thing to say, but it doesn’t hurt to build your own dream world to seek shelter from a cruelty that doesn’t understand what it means to be ‘self’. (As long as you know it’s not good to obsess with that dream world that transcends reality)

The development of the melody to its climax and orchestrated echos was in my opinion masterfully done, as expected by the daughter circle known for its professional parent circle (幽閉サテライト | Yuuhei Satellite). The lyrics for this vocal arrangement is a lot more ‘raw’ yet somewhat poetic in Japanese considering how they managed to fit it in the chaotic 7/8 rhythm.

– Transcription comments:

[1] Halfway through the transcription, I realized that there were probably thought verses based on how the story flowed in the lyrics. Hence I decided it seemed appropriate to include quotation marks to indicate the parts where the character/singer is thinking aloud.
[2] I wasn’t sure if it was “Dearism” or “Dear Rhythm” but I guess Latea’s post ‘Dear Rhythm’ as translated from chinese sounds more appropriate. I couldn’t actually find anything about ‘Dearism’ too.
[3] Fun fact on my initial translation (1): “さめるまえに” (“Sameru mae ni”) could be interpreted as – ‘Before I awake’ or ‘Before it gets cold’ without context. I went with the first interpretation first in view of “幻想” which sets a more dreamy/illusion tone to the setting. I always had an itching feeling that it was the latter because “熱” (heat) was mentioned in close proximity within the same verse.
[4] Fun fact on my initial translation (2): During the second chorus, the part with the (romaji) lyrics “Aka ni somaru hoho made”, I actually somehow heard it to be “I’m coming for my love”. I kind of knew it was wrong because some pronunciation sounds off, but now that I’m corrected with the kanji I actually found it pretty funny. (It’s hard to determine if they are using English or Katakana sometimes if both are present in song lyrics).

– End* Transcription Comments*

*There is no real correlation between the circle-made song lyrics and the actual story of Th17. For more information about Niwatari, the Touhou lore and Japanese folklore refer to the ThWiki here.

Credits to LATEa for uploading the full kanji lyrics so that I can accurately (though not necessarily precisely) transcribe the songs – something which I struggled for 2 weeks hence the delay in this transcription release (My transcription may not match the chinese transcription at their site).

Of course if anyone is more proficient at Japanese and translation I dearly welcome correction to my mistaken interpretations. Please be patient (>.<) I have learnt Japanese only from watching anime and listening to songs.

Post-Ramblings:

Rascal does not dream of a dreaming girl is beautiful.
Still a Shouko supporter even after watching the film.

    Wow, welcome back, dude!

It’s nice to see you take the time for something fascinating like this. Translation work is really cool but also not often talked about.
