JtP: [Touhou Vocal] Incomprehensible Metropolis

I wasn’t planning on doing another blog post, or a translation post for that matter. But considering that it is New Year’s and all, perhaps one quick translation would do before I go back full focus on the work and plans I have to deal with this year.

This one’s pretty depressing, a far cry from conventional Touhou vocal renditions.
(Note: Just like before, this is not an anime review/opinion/commentary post)

JtP: [Touhou Vocal] Untainted Euphoria

Current mood is similar to Haniyasushin as depicted above.

Anyways, Yuuhei Satellite released an XFD of the new single 穢れなきユーフォリア for Touhou’s 6th Autumn Reitaisai (秋例大祭). When I first heard the song of the same title as the single album, I made up my mind to do a translation on it – The style is a great rendition of Keiki Haniyasushin’s theme, with a mix of forcefulness and awesomeness. Which interestingly, the lyrics itself is kinda forceful and sensual hanging on a delicate thread on the tipping point to a raw but poetic story of an isolated artist/creator. Zun’s creation of the sculptor god is, I feel, one of the best character inventions out of all the introduced characters in the entire Touhou series. A creative mix of Japanese, Chinese and Western cultures splashed into one entity, the epitome of creativity itself.

Back to the point, turns out a fan secured and uploaded a full version of the song –  a lot earlier than I expected, but I guess that’s because it is Autumn Reitaisai and not Comiket. So I did a quick lyrical translation run after finding out about it today.

(Of course, this is not a post on anime stuff. I don’t have time to do analysis and reflections on those.)

JtP: [Touhou Vocal] Dream-Coloured Prelude

This is my first post in a long time since I went off the radar to pursue my graduate/post-graduate research. Unfortunately I can’t be very active here – reading and experimenting takes up way too much time to do any other non-research-related hobby reading/writing. So I’m just going with the bare minimum of posting (if that is even the case) what I manage to come up with during my break times.

This post will be totally different from my usual review writings.
It is a translation post (Japanese Translation Post == JtP). I’ve specifically made a new corner, whimsically, to satisfy my own desire to translate a new Touhou song which I can’t get enough of (Part of the reason is also because I can’t stand it when random youtubers change lyrical subtitles to MVs which initially had the correct nuance).

ACTs: A lyrical journey – Indie and Cast

This time I am bringing the Anime Concept Thoughts (ACTs) to the table. Once again, ACTs posts pertain to discussions of a certain concept in anime. It could be a discussion of a theme in an anime series, or an analysis of a common concept over a multitude of anime works.

Today’s topic will be on songs in anime – Openings, Endings and Inserts. The first thing we usually take note of would be the genre of the song. Next, we would probably dive into investigating the creators of the song – Who sung it? Who produced it? Who wrote the lyrics and tune? The bulk of this post will be a discussion on this subtopic – on the singer(s) behind the vocal tracks of the series.

ATEs: Ha He Hi Ho Fu – Mastering the art of Teasing

Welcome to ATEs – Anime Train Excursions. This is another Analysis-&-Thoughts segment where I will string together bits and pieces of a certain feature in anime from various series. Unlike ACTs (Anime Concept Thoughts) or BLoTs (Blogging Thoughts), ATEs will not be analytical but simply fun digests.

I came up with this thought while watching (obviously) Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Translated: Takagi-san the Master Teaser). I didn’t bother thinking of a better title, so I just ‘plagiarized’ the original source by Souichirou Yamamoto.

!Pop-Sup : A day before us

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these Pop-Sup posts – Well what’s so surprising if all I’ve been doing is scheduling them? In any case, I’ll be bringing an interesting dish to the table! It’s still anime – But it’s a Korean anime. I’ve never heard or seen Korean anime, but when I chanced upon this one, I absolutely loved it!

If not for the intelligent recommendation algorithm by Facebook, I wouldn’t have been able to stock up on diabetes (which my current life doesn’t provide) as supplied by this sweet sweet series.

Vocal Thoughts: Letter Song -Answer-

Just 2 weeks ago, I shared a vocaloid song titled Letter Song. It was a song where we ask ourselves who we want to be, what we want to do, and how we feel about the future – 10 years from now. It was a moment of reflection; a brevity of preparation.

With the future so uncertain… What would have changed?
Our surroundings? Or ourselves? Or both?

10 years later, when we remember the promises we made to ourselves, this song – a time capsule – resurfaces and we compare notes with the us from 10 years before. Call it a throwback if you like, but this throwback would be one where we consider the possibilities lost and the the uncertainty that still hangs all this time.

Anime Thoughts (Bite-Sized): Rec

Back in January I did a couple of Bite-Sized thoughts-reviews as time was a little bit of a concern. I intended to do it for 3 different anime series, but I couldn’t get to the last one in time. So I’m going back to finish up the third bite-sized anime series.

I wanted to save the best for the last – Yes, I thoroughly loved this series so much, I’ll give it my love on a scale comparable to Spice and Wolf, but in the modern setting. Perhaps a bite-sized thoughts-review wouldn’t do it justice, so I will consider expanding on the themes and reasons why I really really really loved this show so much.
Now that makes 3 anime series (not counting movies) which I’m absolutely twitterpated with.

[Synopsis (MAL)]

What does adulthood mean to you? An endless cycle of failures and rejections? A life full of work and accumulated wealth? A chance to achieving one’s dreams? A journey of finding your life partner? Or perhaps a humble career coupled with a home that greets you ‘Welcome home!’ at the end of every day?
Meet Fumihiko Matsumaru, a marketing staff in the food and beverages (snack) sector. Holding a stable, but tiring and discouraging job, he looks forward to his movie date with a colleague one evening. Unfortunately he even got the short end of the stick in dating, as his date ditched him for someone better.
Meet Onda Aka, an aspiring voice actress inspired by Audrey Hepburn. One day while waiting for a new opportunity to rise at her doorstep, she practiced her voice acting skills while idling along the streets. Upon encountering a distressed young man, she started an impromptu scenario play-through to relieve the man of his plight – that is of course, not before she took the full opportunity of a free movie experience to study and practice voice acting herself.
The encounter of a cute but strange girl; The fated meeting of a disillusioned man – Aka and Matsumaru started an unlikely acquaintanceship, but it is not long before the world that they knew to be huge and foreign, became smaller, narrower and homely.

Appreciation Post: Thank you for what you do!

A little more than a month ago Aldael nominated me for the Blogger Appreciation Award when award-tagging was still relatively hot (It has cooled down since). He shared how he works around things in his mind palace, and approaches with an overarching optimism & patient temperament, which is definitely a valuable lesson to think about. So apart from thanking him for the nomination, really I should be thanking him for the insight!

Thank you for including rules too:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you, link back to their site
  • Write a paragraph of something positive about yourself
  • Nominate and notify as many bloggers as you wish
  • Use the award image

So… … something positive about myself?
I’d tell you that two minus makes a positive when multiplied together you know?

0 + 0 = 0*0 = 0 (It’s positive as long as it’s non-negative)

The truth is, I’m a pessimist. I’m always considering the worst case scenarios when making decisions; I try for (and also hope for) the best, though I’m pretty much aware that I will mess up somewhere someplace somehow. It’s true that to err is human, but I think it is also true that its a little too excessive and I obsess over that. When it comes to being positive, I can fake it until it becomes real – so most of the time, I look and sound perfectly alright (It’s not even discernible in typing), I fool just about everyone – including myself.

Some things just don’t work.

But, that’s how it is for many people isn’t it? It isn’t just about pessimism. It can apply to anything else – Self-loathing; Lack of confidence; Shyness; Stubbornness; Overthinking, etc (anything along the same lines)…

Perhaps we can change ourselves, or maybe not.
For the latter it can haunt us until the terminus of our lifespan.

However, recognizing our weaknesses – the negativities of our very selves – give us an advantage over ignorance. And so maybe, really big maybe, living with and controlling negativities can be better than changing altogether.

We’re weak. We know that. So what?

It isn’t really right to mention so much negativity when the purpose of this post is to share something positive. Here is where the circle completes though. People say “Two wrongs doesn’t make a right“, here I’m arguing with “Negativities make positivity“. While obsession and pessimism aren’t healthy habits, somehow the combination produces a loophole which I simply live with. Underneath all the excessive doubting, worrying, cursing, and silently developing lots of stress, my mind ultimately gives up and the stress meter no longer works. After which I simply get all chill for the mental stuff and go with the flow while pushing myself to the limits. And I’ll tell  myself over and over that everything is alright (Some cases, it really isn’t and the consequences speak for themselves). Over time, that’s how I become really good at attaching false positive impressions in myself. It serves as a source of motivation, a dare to take risks, a relief to others, and softens the impact when things go south. When that happens, the pessimism kicks in again (stronger), and the whole cycle repeats, this time with reinforced motivation. When things go well, the positive mentality becomes real. In both cases, the pessimism doesn’t go away. However, it doesn’t take much for each event to trigger a learning node, which I end up adapting each time and applying to effect… Pretty much like machine learning. And I feel that’s how negatives make me a positive person (somewhat).

It may be a scab – an ugly one even – but its all good, and it works.

I don’t really know if what I wrote sounds reasonable to any reader, its a case of ” If I omit all the parts on the negativities and mention only its positive derivatives, it would sound as lovely as RBC-chan and platelet-chan, but biologically the ‘surface’ doesn’t speak for the ‘bulk’ “. In the end, that’s how I am positive towards people, things and myself – living on a single thread of hope, faith, despair and doubt.

So if you ask if I am a bright and warm person – I may look like one (or sound like one) – but deep down I know I’m not. I’m just somebody who moulds and remoulds my personality many times over. Like… glass? It may take many more years before positivity becomes a default state, but for now, I’ll have to work with the recurrent pessimism by exercising optimism.
(Yeap, that’s why I like optimism!)

While I’m really happy to be appreciated, I think it’s a lot more important to appreciate others, the things they do, the posts they make, and fundamentally your existence. I’m tempted to nominate bloggers to show my appreciation, but honestly everyone deserves the credit and appreciation (including bloggers whom I’ve not encountered yet). Hence I won’t be making direct nominations, but I do wish that for bloggers who have yet to be nominated for the Blogger Appreciation Award to pick up on this (if you’ve come across reading this) and mention something positive about themselves / share something positive in their own posting.
Spread the positivity and goodness. 🙂

Thanks for dropping by and reading, and as always,
Take care~
